Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her aunt Denise. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, as well as theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As a student DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of an individual member of the Jury. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
